Tandem’s Approach: Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Early Learning

Apr 22, 2025

At Tandem, Partners in Early Learning, we believe that every child deserves access to high-quality, equitable early learning experiences. Research shows that access to books and early learning opportunities significantly reduces the need for later academic interventions and increases high school graduation rates. However, families impacted by racism, poverty, and other systemic inequities often face substantial barriers to both access and quality in early education. That’s why each year, Tandem distributes more than 48,000 multilingual, multicultural children’s books and provides high-quality programming to 20,000 children and families across San Francisco, Alameda, and Contra Costa counties.

We also know that the books children read, the stories they hear, and the learning environments they grow up in play a critical role in shaping their self-identity and understanding of the world. That’s why diversity, equity, and inclusion are not just priorities for us—they are fundamental values that guide every aspect of our work.

Our commitment to diversity means ensuring that the books we provide, the programs we design, and the partnerships we foster reflect the rich cultural, linguistic, and social diversity of the communities we serve. Through multilingual and multicultural book collections, we strive to provide children with mirrors that affirm their identities and windows that allow them to see the lived experiences of others. Our professional development and family engagement programs incorporate culturally responsive practices that honor and uplift the voices of families and educators from all backgrounds.

Tandem also recognizes that achieving true equity requires actively dismantling systemic barriers that disproportionately impact children from historically marginalized communities. That’s why we prioritize working alongside families, educators, and organizations that have been most affected by racial and economic exclusion. We take seriously our role in advocating for inclusive policies, resisting censorship in children’s literature, and ensuring that all children—regardless of their race, language, ability, gender identity, or family structure—see themselves represented in the stories they read and the learning environments they inhabit.

This commitment is not new. Since our founding, Tandem has been dedicated to disrupting inequities in early education, and this will remain a guiding principle in our work. We will continue to stand in solidarity with families, educators, and communities, ensuring that diversity, equity, and inclusion remain at the heart of Tandem’s early learning programs. Because when every child feels seen, valued, and supported, they are better positioned to thrive—not just in school, but in life.
