Tandem Literacy Champions are certified volunteers who donate their time towards building a better future for the children and families within their own neighborhoods. You’ll find Literacy Champions hosting workshops about early brain development in community meeting spaces. You’ll find them meeting with parents from their community at the local park to talk about book-sharing and its benefits. You could find them just about anywhere families are on a regular basis, sharing knowledge, sharing free children’s books, and sharing their passion for building brighter futures for young children.
The Tandem Literacy Champions program follows a train-the-trainer model in which Tandem staff will train Literacy Champions in early literacy and book-sharing topics through a six-module curriculum. These classes are provided free of charge. Once completing the classes, Literacy Champions then commit to sharing their knowledge with families in their communities for a total of ten volunteer hours. Every step of the way, Tandem staff members are available to provide the necessary support Literacy Champions need to ensure their outreach is effective. Each Literacy Champion will receive free training materials, high-quality children’s books, and other free resources to share with families.
